8th April

We are now playing a waiting game with the weather.

It has been wet and the field is really soaking wet.

We have had another week of rain, plus on Friday morning we had a dump of snow.

This coming week it is to be wet again, so the field is not getting a chance of drying out any time soon.

We are lucky; all our blocked seeds are growing away in their trays as normal.

And we still have time, I usually need to start planting around the first week in May.

So, we could wait until the end of April before ploughing, and I could go straight in with the bed former and prepare ground for planting quickly.

But the farmers around me that grow wheat and barley are really struggling.

They should have their spring barley already sown, even if not sown the ground should be ready for them to get straight in with their seed drills.

The contractors around us who sow thousands of acres of peas are already three weeks behind, they have a very short window when the peas need to be sown.

And the other contractors that work in a big scale are the early potato growers. Also struggling with the soaking wet soil.

But with all the wet weather we now have all the tunnels fully planted.

In the tunnels we now have spring cabbage, Ruby chard, Spinach, Lettuce, oriental salad mix, and kohl Rabi.

And in two other tunnels we have all the seeds sitting in their trays growing away nicely.

This week we will just spend weeding the tunnels, there is now not much to do with the ground being so wet.

But before we know it, there will be sun and wind, the field will dry out, then there will not be enough hours in the day.

We seem to be having some issues with e mails, if you have not received a reply from an e mail they may be in your spam, we thought it was an issue with us, but it seems it is actually an issue with the e mail provider, technology is great when it works, not so great when it doesn’t.
