19th Agust

This week at long last we are going to start harvesting our leeks and onions.

They are around 3 weeks later than we would usually start to harvest them, but they are looking great, so they will be in your nets this week.

Over the last few months, I have been going on about the weather all season and the effect on the crops.

But the uchi Kuri squash plants are looking amazing, and have the usual 4 to 5 uchi per plant.

These plants, also look as big, as they would usually be.

But the rest of the squash plants are looking much smaller than usual.

So, the Uche kuri crop can obviously handle the cooler summer temperatures that we have had this year.

The courgette, bon bon, spaghetti and pumpkins have not enjoyed the summer.

This week in the field it was time to take the fleece of off the over winter cabbages, purple sprouting broccoli and winter cauliflower.

When I had the fleece of, the crop was looking good, and so was the weeds.

So, the first job was to get through with the camera weeder on the John deere.

With that done the crop was looking good.

The final job, was to get them hand weeded, so it was in with the bed weeder

By Friday we had them all weeded and re fleeced.

We will need to go over them a couple of more times before the winter arrives.

For a trial we are going to block a couple of different varieties of seeds this week, for a hopeful late tunnel planting.

These are Chicory and a Chinese pack choy, they are supposed to be ready around December time.

These seeds are from Tamar seeds.

Last year I tried an over winter lettuce from Tamar seeds, I never thought they would survive the winter.

But they did and were amazing.

So, fingers crossed the chicory and Chinese pack choy will work too.
